Dress Requirements

All callees must wear:

  • dark suits
  • a court shirt and bands or a court shirt and ladies collar or a ladies collarette
  • a hired or purchased barrister’s gown

For the ceremony all suit jackets must be buttoned and wigs are not required. Hair must be neat and tidy and long hair must be tied back off the face and shoulders. The photographer will have wigs available if you would like to be photographed in one.

Male callees

Male callees must wear a barrister's gown over a dark suit with a white winged -collar shirt and starched bands. The shirt may be:

  • a tunic court shirt with attachable wing collar
  • a regular plain white wing-collared shirt (no pleats, no black buttons)

  

Standard collared shirts are not suitable.

Female callees

Female callees must wear a Barrister's gown over a dark suit with:

  • a court bib (aka collarette) over a white top

or a white tunic or mandarin court shirt with ladies collar

  

  • a white winged-collar court shirt with starched bands; this may be a tunic court shirt with attachable wing collar or a regular plain white wing-collared shirt (no pleats, no black buttons)

  

Standard collared shirts are not suitable.

Gowns

You must hire or buy a barrister’s gown for the day in advance. You can hire a barrister’s gown, and bands if appropriate, online from Ede & Ravenscroft  from 3 weeks before a particular Call date.

Guests

Please ask your guests to dress as they might if attending a university graduation ceremony, i.e. smart daywear.
