Dress Code and Rules

Dress Code

The dress code for all Qualifying Sessions (QSs) is:

  • dark suits with white shirts (men and women) and ties (men)
  • gowns (all - students, barristers and benchers - except guests)

You can collect a gown (without charge) from the robing room which is located in the Rose Heilbron Room on the ground floor at 10 South Square. The entrance is directly underneath the bridge; the same entrance to the Bridge Bar.

Guests are not required to wear gowns but must wear an appropriate dark suit and tie.

Rules and requirements

Once you have joined the Inn, in addition to passing the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC), you must complete 12 Qualifying Sessions (QSs) within a two year period in order to be called to the Bar. If you are a transferring lawyer, you must complete six QSs within three years of being called.

  • In order to gain a QS, students must bring their QS ticket when attending unless the QS is ticketless (introductory events, residential/advocacy weekends and QSs on Circuit)
  • Being called in person is worth 1 QS. Call in absentia does not qualify as a QS
  • Only 3 QSs before the commencement of the BPTC will be counted as part of your overall 12 required
  • You are allowed to book as many term QSs as you like, however only 6 QSs will be counted per term
  • For the purpose of banqueting arrangements, student bookings can only be taken between the booking opening and closing dates
  • Student registration times for QSs at the Inn will vary. Notice of the registration and session timings, as well as the location of a specific event, will be printed on your QS ticket. Any changes to student registration times will be emailed to attendees, published on the Inn’s website, announced via social media and displayed on the Inn’s physical notice boards
  • For formal dining, members and guests are not expected to leave Hall between Grace before Dinner and the final toast of Domus. Attendees should therefore ensure that they use the facilities before entering Hall
