Gray's Inn

The Vis International Moot

The Inn is sponsoring between 4 and 6 Gray's Inn students to participate in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot next taking place in Vienna in April 2018.

The Inn will cover the cost of economy flights, accommodation and a subsistence stipend.

There are two categories of team member: oral advocate and researcher.

Oral advocate: a team member who will speak in the oral rounds in Vienna. You will also be expected to do your share of the research and drafting work. There are between 2-4 spaces of this type.

Dependent on uptake, the Inn may have to recruit an additional 2 students as researchers. The researcher position will still involve travel to Vienna but will focus on research and not being an oral advocate.

About the Moot

The goal of the Moot is to foster the study of international commercial law and arbitration for the resolution of international business disputes. The Moot is now in its 25th year and has developed in to a very well respected international competition with various alumni networks currently in existence. This prestige comes at a price and the work load is intense. Please do not apply for a place if you do not feel that you can commit to the team and keep to internally imposed research deadlines.

Why the Viz?

The Viz is a very prestigious moot. Additionally, if the areas of commercial law or arbitration float your boat then it is invaluable experience to put on your pupillage application.

Who is eligible?

All Bar Students and Law Students are eligible, with 2 exceptions:

1. Any student who participated in the Vienna or Hong Kong moot last year, is not allowed to participate again this year.

2. Students who are currently working in a law office will not be eligible, dependent on the work they are doing.

If in doubt, please refer to the Viz website.

The Inn will not take any responsibility for arranging travel visas for students.
