150 Anniversary of the Birth of Lord Atkin
The exhibition, "Lord Atkin: from Queensland to the House of Lords", was officially opened by the Chief Justice of Australia on 28 November 2017: the 150 anniversary of the birth in Brisbane of Lord Atkin.
That evening, The Hon Chief Justice Kiefel gave the Selden Society inaugural Lord Atkin Lecture titled, “Judicial Courage and the Decorum of Dissent”, which is available to watch online.
The exhibition has been very well received and occupies five different walls in the Supreme Court Library of Queensland in Brisbane.
The Library has also developed an online version of the exhibition, which has much of the text, but only some of the images that are in the physical exhibition, which includes:
- Life in Queensland
- Robert Travers Atkin
- Influential women
- Donoghue v Stevenson AC 562
- Liversidge v Anderson AC 206
Gray’s Inn contributed to the exhibition by providing several photographs and other images which bring the exhibition to life.
Justice Peter Applegarth has also written an article titled, “Who inspired Lord Atkin?”, published in The Journal of the Bar Association of Queensland.
