Change to Standing Orders

Education and training are central to the role of the Inn; but they do not reflect the entirety of its role. The Inn has a wider purpose.  On 25 November 2021, to reflect and reinforce that wider purpose, Pension amended the Inn’s Standing Orders.

The Inn’s new mission statement, as embedded within the Standing Orders, now reads:

“The Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn exists to support, educate and develop its student members and to provide continuing professional development to its barrister members in accordance with its historic traditions.  It promotes the values of the rule of law, access to justice, equality, diversity and inclusion within the community – as well as a vision of a modern, independent and internationally active Bar.  The Inn has a pastoral responsibility to its members and seeks to be a source of wisdom and support when needed”.

This statement confirms that the Inn must engage with a wider public interest beyond the education and training of aspirant barristers – by promoting rule of law, access to justice, equality, diversity and inclusion as part of its core mission.  By stating these values expressly in the Standing Orders, the Inn is exhorting its members to be ever mindful of their duty to uphold them as part of their professional identity.
