Information for those who do not qualify for BBA assistance
For those students, newly qualified barristers and Pupils from Gray’s Inn who fall outside the statutes of the Barristers’ Benevolent Association (they have not ‘held a brief’), the Inn has set up its own scheme of assistance.
The forms of hardship and need which arise will probably vary greatly. However, the overall aim of the Inn is to prevent absolute hardship, helping those members whose income or potential income has disappeared to put food on the table, and where possible to help keep open a career at the Bar in the future.
A newly established Hardship Working Group (HWG) chaired by the Vice Treasurer will consider requests for support from applicable individuals who are unable to get assistance from the BBA. Some basic and essential financial information will be required in order for the HWG to be able to assess need and details of this are available on the COVID-19 section of the Inn website (Annex C) and should be emailed to the HWG via the Under Treasurer (email Tony Harking). All information will be treated in the strictest confidence and the full Terms of Reference of the HWG are also available on the Inn’s website.
