Archivist and Records Manager

The Archives of Gray’s Inn have recently moved to a purpose-built location on the Inn’s Estate.  We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Archivist and Records Manager to oversee the final stages of establishing the new facility and to manage the Inn's records and historic archival collections.

The Archivist and Records Manager reports to the Director of Library Services and works alongside the Library team in the provision of a combined library and archives service.

The successful candidate will have a postgraduate degree in archives and records management (or similar) and at least 3 years post-qualification experience.

The Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn

Gray’s Inn is one of four Inns of Court, the historic societies that educate and train barristers in England and Wales. The Inn provides the Library and Archives, the Chapel, dining, scholarships, advocacy training and other facilities for students and barristers.

The Archives

The Inn’s Pension Books and Admission Registers date from 1569 and 1581 respectively, while other records survive from the 18th century onwards. In addition, there are small collections of photographs, illustrations and ephemera and several deposits of private papers, including those of Lord Atkin and Sir William Clarke Hall and a selection of the papers of Venetia Stephenson, the first woman to conduct a murder defence in England. Gray’s also holds the surviving records of Barnard's Inn and Staple Inn.

Duties include

  • Managing the day-to-day running of the Archives
  • Maintaining the archival and records management policies
  • Cataloguing archive materials
  • Digital preservation using Preservica
  • Assisting with historical and other enquiries, tours of the Inn, exhibitions and events, and providing content for the Inn’s website and social media channels
