The Job Role: Graduate Library Trainee

Contract: 1 year fixed-term, 35 hours per week including working until 8.00pm one day per week and on Saturday when requested.

Reporting to: Library Services Manager

Salary: £27,430

A traineeship for someone interested in gaining experience prior to studying for a library qualification. To staff the enquiry desk, carry out a range of library housekeeping tasks and generally support all aspects of the service. To provide support to the Archivist & Records Manager as required. A programme of training and visits is provided.

Main duties and responsibilities

Enquiries and document supply

  • To provide a research and enquiry service for barristers and students within the Library and by phone or email.
  • To fulfil document supply requests for copies of law reports, journal articles, etc.
  • To assist members with all aspects of using the Library and its resources.
  • To identify and circulate relevant press articles to staff at the Inn.

Cataloguing and serials management

  • Cataloguing and serials management using Sirsi Dynix.
  • Some cataloguing of rare books and special collections.
  • Assisting with binding orders.

General

  • Looseleaf filing, shelving and other housekeeping tasks as required.
  • Assisting with projects such as stock moves and retrospective cataloguing.
  • Contributing Library content to the Inn’s social media channels.
  • Creating Library displays.
  • Keeping statistics.
  • Updating the staff procedure manual.
  • Assisting with Library tours and at student events as required.

The Archive

  • Carrying out research and project work for the Archivist & Records Manager

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential

  • A university degree or equivalent.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to work on your own initiative within established guidelines.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Capable of work involving lifting and carrying of books and movement of book trolleys.

Desirable

  • Experience of working in an office or customer-facing environment.
  • An interest in library or information work as a career.
