What is a cookie?

Cookies are small text files that are stored on your computer’s browser directory or hard drive. How we use them

The cookies used on our website are not used to identify you personally. We use cookies to help identify aspects of your behaviour, for example what pages you visit, how long you spent on each page and your journey to those pages through the site.  We also look at how you visited the site including what browser you used and type of device.  We look at this information to better understand how people use our site, popular pages etc. so we can make improvements accordingly.

This cookie is associated with the AddThis social sharing widget which is commonly embedded in websites to enable visitors to share content with a range of networking and sharing platforms. It stores an updated page share count.

__cfduid

Cookie associated with sites using CloudFlare, used to speed up page load times. According to CloudFlare it is used to override any security restrictions based on the IP address the visitor is coming from. It does not contain any user identification information.

The main purpose of this cookie is: Strictly Necessary

__utma

This is one of the four main cookies set by the Google Analytics service which enables website owners to track visitor behaviour and measure site performance. This cookie lasts for 2 years by default and distinguishes between users and sessions. The cookie is created when the javascript library executes and no existing __utma cookies exists. The cookie is updated every time data is sent to Google Analytics.

This cookie is used to distinguishes unique users by assigning a randomly generated number as a client identifier. It is included in each page request in a site and used to calculate visitor, session and campaign data for the sites analytics reports. By default it is set to expire after 2 years.

This cookie name is associated with Google Universal Analytics, according to documentation it is used to throttle the request rate – limiting the collection of data on high traffic sites. It expires after 10 minutes.

Drupal.tableDrag.showWeight

This cookie helps handle the consistent navigation of tabbed pages and forms across a range of different browsers.  It is set when you use pages where information appears in tabbed format.  Currently it is set by the Drupal system to expire 12 months after it is deployed.  This will be amended as soon as possible to expire at the end of the session.

Website Privacy Policy

Our website can be visited without any personal data being provided by or collected from you, the visitor.  However, some pages will ask you to register or to provide some personal data. We will only do this if we need to in order to provide you with some service, facility or information which you have asked for. When you provide data it will be processed for those purposes, and for internal administration and research.  Performing those functions may involve disclosure to organisations or individuals associated with, but not part of, Gray’s Inn. If it does the disclosure will be made only for those purposes.

If we want to use your personal data to provide you with information about matters that you have not specifically asked about we will tell you and you will be asked to opt in. If you do not, we will not contact you about such matters. If you do you can opt out at any time.

We will not share your data with third parties for marketing purposes unless we have told you that we wish to do this and you have given your consent. If you do you can opt out at any time.

We will do our best to protect the security of your data but since the internet is not an entirely secure medium of communication we cannot guarantee the security of any information you input on this website or send to us via the internet.

Regarding those few which are not, the Society is committed to obtaining the necessary consent from copyright holders before publishing images but sometimes, despite our best efforts in exercising due diligence, we have been unable to establish the identity of copyright holders or to contact them.

If you are able to give us further information on the copyright ownership of any images that we have left uncredited or have credited wrongly please email the archivist and we will take the appropriate remedial action.
