Attendees of the Advocacy and Voice workshops, will be given the opportunity to sign up for a further 3 sessions as part of the Advocacy and Voice course. You will be asked to submit a short application stating why you want to attend the course and to confirm your commitment to attend all sessions.

The course will continue to explore the importance of the voice, breath and body, and explore different techniques and how they can be applied to advocacy training and pupillage interviews.

The course wraps up with each student presenting to the group either through a debate or simple legal submission, using the skills and techniques they have learned.

Edward Bennett

Edward trained at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and in 20 years in the industry has enjoyed a theatre career, playing leading roles at the RSC, National Theatre, Old Vic, across the country and internationally.

With a passion for Shakespeare, Edward has worked extensively with the RSC, various drama schools and with his own company in creating a new practical approach to Shakespeare through the lens of rhetoric and has used this work in various fields to help all ages and professions with confidence, identity and expression.

Kay Welch

Kay is Head of Voice at the RADA. Kay trained as an actress at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama before completing an MA in Vocal Pedagogy at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

Kay works with all aspects of the voice: practical voice, application to text, accent and dialect. She works in theatre, TV and film.

  • 9:00pm – session ends

Qualifying Sessions

Qualifying Session (QS):  1 QS (3QSs awarded for full attendance of course)

Theme: Advocacy Skills, Preparation for Pupillage, Career Development and Wellbeing

Learning aims:

1. Participate in exercises and activities to build confidence in terms of oral advocacy and public speaking
2. Consider strategies and approaches to develop voice and presence
3. Discuss strategies for dealing with nerves and anxiety before public speaking

This QS relates to the following elements of the Professional Statement for Barristers: 1.8, 1.9, 1.11, 1.15, 1.17, 2.5, 3.3, 3.4
