“Is it time for an ethical re-set in the legal profession?”

This year’s CLLS Lecture will be provided by Professor Richard Moorhead and will be followed by a panel discussion. The evening will be hosted by Master Peter Gross.

The Panel will include Professor Moorhead, Stephen Kenny KC (7KBW) and Julie Norris (Kingsley Napley).

This is a Qualifying Session for student and transferring qualified lawyer members of Gray’s Inn.

  • Master Peter Gross

    Master Peter Gross

    Sir Peter Gross is a retired Lord Justice of Appeal. He was the Senior Presiding Judge for England and Wales from January 2013 to December 2015 and lead Judge for International Relations 2018-2019.

    He chaired the Independent Human Rights Act Review (IHRAR) which examined whether the Human Rights Act 1998 is working effectively.

    Sir Peter was the Master Treasurer of Gray’s Inn in 2022.

  • Stephen Kenny KC

    Stephen Kenny KC

    Stephen Kenny KC is a commercial barrister, practising from Chambers at 7 King’s Bench Walk, Temple, London EC4Y 7DS.  He was called in 1987 and took silk in 2006.  He specialises in disputes arising out of international trade – including those concerning shipping, commodities, insurance and reinsurance, and trade finance.  He works principally as an advocate, in recent years mostly in confidential international arbitrations. He also has an advisory practice, particularly in connection with insurance.  He is ranked as a leading silk in his areas of specialisation by both Chambers and Partners and The Legal 500.  Additionally, he acts as an arbitrator and mediator.  Further details.

    Stephen has been involved in the work of the Bar Council for more than 20 years.  He was a member of the Professional Conduct and Complaints Committee 2004-2010; of the Professional Practice Committee 2011-2015; and of the Ethics Committee 2016-2023 (its Chair 2021-2023). Since 2024 he has chaired the Bar Council’s Regulation Panel.  He has been a member of the Bar Council since 2021.

     

  • Julie Norris

    Julie Norris

    Julie is an investigations and regulatory partner at Kingsley Napley LLP, specialising in advising clients in the legal services sector. As well as advising law firms and solicitors on legal ethics, investigations and disciplinary prosecutions, Julie also acts for barristers and judges under regulatory investigation. Julie is top ranked in both major legal directories for her work in the field.

    She is a committee member of the Association of Partnership Practitioners and a contributing author and consultation board member of Thomson Reuters Practical Law. Julie was a member of the Institute of Business Ethics’ recent task force on Business Ethics and the Legal Profession, which was established to examine the ethical challenges faced to law firms acting for overseas kleptocrats and oligarchs.

  • Professor Richard Moorhead

    Professor Richard Moorhead

    Richard Moorhead is a former solicitor, Professor of Law and Professional Ethics at the University of Exeter and a Professor of Law at Monash University, Melbourne, as well as being an honorary Professor of Law at University College London. He sits on the Horizon Compensation Advisory Board advising the Department for Business and Trade on Post Office compensation schemes. In 2024, he gave the Hamlyn Lectures on lawyers’ ethics. His forthcoming book is called, Frail Professionalism. He blogs on lawyers and on the PO Scandal.

    He was elected to a Fellowship in the Academy of Social Sciences in 2019.

    Professor Moorhead is a member of the Horizon Compensation Advisory Board and has researched and written extensively about the Post Office Scandal.

Theme: Ethics, Standards and Values

Learning aims:

  1. Consider how the professional ethical duties for solicitors and barristers and current regulatory approaches serve the public interest.
  2. Discuss the regulatory approaches required to maintain high ethical standards and protect consumers of legal services.
  3. Reflect upon the ethical issues for the solicitor and barrister professions identified in recent public inquiries, and their implications.

This QS relates to the following elements of the Professional Statement for Barristers: 1.1, 1.16, 2.1, 3.1, 4.1
