The Pied Piper of Hamelin’, a children’s opera
‘The Pied Piper of Hamelin’ is the first of Christopher Bowers-Broadbent’s four operas, ‘The Last Man’ (2003) and ‘The Face’ (2012) have already been performed in Gray’s Inn Hall – to much acclaim!’ The Pied Piper’ (with a libretto by Jeremy Hornsby) premiered in the open-air theatre, Opera Holland Park, by the West-Eleven Children’s Opera Group in 1972, and has since been performed in Roundhouse in Camden, Fairfield Halls in Croydon, All Saints’ Muswell Hill.
It tells the story of the Pied Piper who rids the Hamelin town of rats, but then rids the townspeople of their children also, all except one boy.
With the recent arrival in the Inn of the City Junior School, it seems ideal that we mount an opera that so wonderfully involves these children in the life of the Inn.
