This weekend is a great opportunity to gain real advocacy experience: examining and cross-examining witnesses in The Royal Courts of Justice, in front of a real judge, before receiving feedback on your performance from the Inn’s advocacy trainers

Students will also discuss Ethical scenarios they may face at the Bar, and hear about Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion within the profession

Qualifying Session

Qualifying Session (QS): 4 QS

Theme: Advocacy Skills, Ethics, Standards and Value, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Learning aims:

Equality, diversity and inclusion

• To consider equality, diversity and inclusion at the Bar
• To discuss implications of inequality and a lack of diversity and inclusion on the rule of law and the profession.

This QS relates to the following elements of the Professional Statement for Barristers: 1.1, 1.8, 1.9, 1.10, 1.16, 2.3, 3.3, 3.4, 4.1, 4.4

Advocacy training

• To practise delivering examination in chief of witnesses that is clear, well-organised and persuasive.
• To practise delivering cross-examination of witnesses that is clear, well-organised and persuasive.
• To consider content and advocacy skills for a closing speech.
• To demonstrate confidence in advocacy, incorporating feedback from trainers

This QS relates to the following elements of the Professional Statement for Barristers: 1.3, 1.5, 1.8, 1.11, 1.15, 1.17, 2.6, 3.1, 3.4, 4.1

Ethics, standards and value

• To discuss ethical dilemmas in the context of professional practice.
• To apply the code of conduct to inform ethical decisions in line with standards and values of the profession.
