Lord Mansfield (1705-1793) is a giant of English legal history, instrumental in the development of English commercial law. His decisions are still regularly cited in cases in England and Wales and the US.
In this lecture, The Rt. Hon Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury (President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom 2012-2017, Treasurer of Lincoln’s Inn 2017) will consider how Manfield’s jurisprudence was influenced by his politically dangerous family background, his wide range of interests and more.
Lord Mansfield (1705-93) is one of the giants of English legal history. He was instrumental in the development of English law, and in particular commercial law, and his decisions over the course of his 32 years as Lord Chief Justice included definitions of fundamental legal principles. His decisions are still regularly cited in cases in England and Wales and in the United States.
In this lecture, the Rt Hon. Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury, President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom from 2012 to 2017 and Treasurer of Lincoln’s Inn in 2017, will consider how Mansfield’s jurisprudence was influenced by his politically dangerous family background, his deep learning and wide-ranging interests, and his political career.
