Joining Gray’s Inn as a student Member means you will get the support you need on your journey to becoming a barrister.
Your journey to a career at the Bar will be supported by the Education Department, which provides career services, professional development, education & training, scholarships and pastoral care to student members. The department processes your membership application to join the Inn, organises Qualifying Sessions, arranges your Call to the Bar and delivers the compulsory training courses required during your pupillage and tenancy.

Don’t forget to check out our scholarships. Our GDL and Bar Course scholarships must be applied for in advance of your course and can be applied for before you join the Inn. You can only apply to one Inn.

When to apply
You must submit your application at least 12 weeks before the start of your Bar Course. If you are undertaking the two-part Bar Course, you must apply for membership at least 12 weeks before the start of Part 2. You may only apply to join one Inn, and you must be a member of an Inn before beginning the vocational stage of Bar training.
You can apply:
- from the second year of your qualifying law degree, provided you can demonstrate that you are on track to achieve at least a lower second-class degree
- once you have a confirmed place on the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), if you hold a non-law degree with at least a lower second-class classification

Please note that it can take up to 6 weeks to process your application. You are strongly advised to apply as early as possible. Applications submitted fewer than 12 weeks before the start of your Bar Course will not be accepted. If you need to request an extension due to extenuating circumstances, please contact the Admissions Team by email. All requests are considered on a case-by-case basis.
Once your membership is confirmed, you will be able to book Qualifying Sessions and access the Inn’s member facilities.
