Barrister Members can apply now to become a Master of the Bench and contribute to the Inn’s governance.

The responsibility for the organisation and running of the Inn is divided between the Masters of the Bench (also known as ‘Benchers’) in Pension and the Under Treasurer, its Chief Executive.

We are seeking barrister Members from all Circuits. If you are a barrister on the North, North Eastern, Midland, Wales and Chester or Western Circuit, become a Master of the Bench and help us ensure that every Circuit is represented at the highest level of the Inn.

Applications are open to Members:

  • of the Employed Bar
  • the Self Employed Bar (Juniors and Silks)
  • barristers who are Members of Hall practising as solicitors whilst retaining their status as Barristers
  • barristers who are practising as solicitors and under the previous rules had to give up their membership of the Inn
  • to be considered a candidate for election to the Bench, you must be 10 years plus post Call

In considering candidates, the EIC (Election Information Committee) and subsequently Pension will consider the following criteria:

  • standing at the Bar including formal appointments
  • service to the Inn and to the profession, including Circuits and specialist Bar associations
  • prospective service as a Bencher
  • an understanding of diversity issues

Gray’s Inn encourages applications from all who desire to contribute to the governance of the Inn. Our policy and supporting processes to elect Masters of the Bench aims to be fair and transparent to all.  Barrister members of the Inn are elected to the Bench in accordance with the procedures set out in the Inn’s Standing Orders and the Inn’s rules.
