The Gray’s Inn Student Law Journal is now open for 2025–26!

The Gray’s Inn Student Law Journal is an annual collection of legal essays, case comments, and book reviews, written by student members of Gray’s Inn and published online and in print.

We are seeking:

  • Contributors write about a legal topic
    and
  • Sub-editors to be in charge of peer-review

Email Mia Carey (Editor) as soon as possible if you are interested in editing/contributing.

Why Get Involved?

The timeline of the journal is carefully structured around the pupillage window; contributing and/or editing boosts applications by showing you are passionate about the law and capable of thinking critically about it.

This is also the ideal platform to begin a career in academia/contribute to scholarship in a low-pressure environment.

We accept submissions on a myriad of topics. This is a chance to explore areas of law that you may not get the chance to during your studies, or simply to research topics in greater depth.

How to Apply

Sub-editing: please email expressions of interest to the editor, along with i) a writing sample and ii) a brief statement of the area(s) of law in which you would like to review.

Submissions: please email submissions to the editor as a Word document, in a sensible font and layout, conforming to the Style Guide for submissions (PDF). Please note we accept submissions on a rolling basis.

Types of Submissions

Essays/Articles – c. 3000 words This can be adjusted if the topic demands it.

Book Reviews – c. 1000 words

Case Comments – c. 1000-3000 words

Repurposing works from your legal education for publication is permitted – your only time commitment would be for revisions.

You can find examples of any of these styles in previous editions of the journal on the Gray’s Inn website.

A Note on Peer Review

Peer reviewing provides an opportunity to get involved without having to produce work (although you are still allowed to submit works). We are particularly keen for those who have written previously for the Law Journal to help others this year by reviewing work.

As a peer reviewer, you will receive 1-2 essays on a topic area you are interested in. There will be two stages of review, with contributors making edits according to your suggestions after each round.

Peer review will be conducted anonymously to ensure we can get the best possible content into the journal.

There will be a session on how to go about peer review, and a template will be provided for you.

Deadlines and How to Get Involved

Email Mia Carey (Editor) as soon as possible if you are interested in editing/contributing.

  • The deadline for sub-editor expressions of interest is 12 December 2025
  • The deadline for submissions is 27 February 2026

We look forward to receiving your work and supporting another year of student-led legal scholarship at Gray’s Inn.
