In Philadelphia in 2011 and Hall in 2014, Gray’s Inn and the American Inns of Court held debates on the question “This House Believes the Declaration of Independence was an Illegal Document”.

To mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence a debate will be held in Washington DC on the legacy and the legality of the Declaration on Friday 30th October 2026. It will be followed by a reception and dinner celebrating the close legal, cultural and personal ties between the United Kingdom and the United States of America and our common law legal heritage.

The Inn is seeking expressions of interest from those who would like to participate on the Gray’s Inn team. All experience levels are most welcome but the ability to verbally advocate in person before an audience with authority on the topic will be key. The trip would be self-funded in terms of flights and accommodation but attendance at the AIC’s Celebration of Excellence Dinner which takes place at the Supreme Court would be included.

Members interested in participating, should email the Chief of Staff.
