Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we live and work, but it is also creating new opportunities for abuse. This session will explore the legal, ethical and societal challenges posed by sexually explicit deepfakes and other forms of technology-facilitated harm. Particular attention will be given to the disproportionate impact these technologies can have on women and marginalised groups, and the role of law, regulation and individual responsibility in promoting equality, dignity and respect in the digital age. Participants will consider how legal professionals can respond to emerging technologies in a way that supports equality, diversity and inclusion while balancing innovation and freedom of expression.

The session will be led by Mariya Peykova of 3PB, a specialist commercial, public and information law barrister with expertise in data protection, privacy and regulatory law. Mariya has undertaken a placement at the Information Commissioner’s Office and has written extensively on the legal issues surrounding sexually explicit deepfakes, AI-generated image abuse and the adequacy of the current regulatory framework
