The Inn is delighted to note the Judicial appointment of the following Gray’s Inn Members in October 2024.

Janice M. Pereira

Hon. Dame Janice M. Pereira, DBE, will be sitting with the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council.
Congratulations to the former Chief Justice of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, the Hon. Dame Janice M. Pereira DBE, who will be sitting with the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London for a week in December.

David Underhalter

Master Unterhalter has been appointed to the South African Supreme Court of Appeal.

Simon Ash

The King has appointed Simon Ash KC to be a Circuit Judge on the advice of the Lord Chancellor, the Right Honourable Shabana Mahmood MP, and the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable the Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill.

The Lady Chief Justice has deployed him to the Midlands Circuit, based at Birmingham Crown Court, with effect from 28 October 2024.

Simon Ash KC will be known as His Honour Judge Ash KC. He was called to the Bar (Gray’s Inn) in 1999 and took Silk in 2021. He was appointed as a Recorder in 2019.

Edmund Fowler

The King has appointed Edmund Fowler to be a Circuit Judge on the advice of the Lord Chancellor, the Right Honourable Shabana Mahmood MP, and the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable the Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill.

The Lady Chief Justice has deployed him to the South East Circuit, based at Canterbury Combined Court Centre, with effect from 28 October 2024.

Edmund Fowler will be known as His Honour Judge Edmund Fowler. He was called to the Bar (Gray’s Inn) in 1992. He was appointed as a Recorder in 2022.

Richard McConaghy

The King has appointed Richard McConaghy to be a Circuit Judge on the advice of the Lord Chancellor, the Right Honourable Shabana Mahmood MP, and the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable the Baroness Carr of Walton-on-the-Hill.

The Lady Chief Justice has deployed him to the Midlands Circuit, based at Stoke-on-Trent Combined Court, with effect from 4 November 2024.

Richard McConaghy, will be known as His Honour Judge McConaghy. He was called to the Bar (Grays Inn) in 2005. He was appointed as a Recorder in 2022.

Justice Bright

The Lady Chief Justice, with the concurrence of the Lord Chancellor, has announced the appointment of a Presiding Judge.

Mr Justice Bright has been appointed to the Northern Circuit where he will succeed Mrs Justice Ellenbogen.

The appointment is made from 1 November 2024, when the current Presiding Judge steps down, to 31 December 2027.

Mr Justice Bright was called to the Bar (Gray’s Inn) in 1987 and took silk in 2007. He was appointed a Recorder in 2018, a Deputy High Court Judge in 2022 and a High Court Judge in January 2023.

Presiding Judges are responsible for the deployment of the judiciary and allocation of cases on their Circuit.  They also have a responsibility for general supervision of judges on their Circuits.
