Angharad Hughes is a criminal barrister, called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn in 2015. She was awarded the Ann Goddard Scholarship during her pupillage.
Committed to promoting social mobility at the Bar, Angharad founded the Griffin Access Programme (GAP), Gray’s Inn’s pro bono initiative supporting aspiring barristers from underrepresented backgrounds. She developed GAP after serving as Director of Vocalise.
She sits on the Gray’s Inn Barristers’ Committee and began her career at the independent Bar before moving in-house. She now practises as an employed barrister at Howard Kennedy LLP.
Reflecting on her journey, Angharad credits Gray’s Inn with playing a pivotal role in her career:
“There are countless examples — from late-night conversations with the then Director of Education when I nearly gave up, to receiving funding to launch a schools’ mock trial programme. But what stands out most is my first dining session. I was overwhelmed by the grandeur — eating in gowns, the formal toasts — having come from a university where Domino’s pizza was the dining norm. Initially, I felt out of place. But the warmth and support of the members quickly showed me that ordinary people belong at the Bar too.”
