Gray’s Inn is pleased to announce that the family of Sandra Day O’Connor has given permission for the Inn to award the Sandra Day O’Connor Scholarship, which will be awarded to Internship Scholars undertaking placements in the United States.
Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Ronald Reagan and served from 1981 until 2006. She was the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States and was awarded Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama in 2009. She was an Honorary Bencher of Gray’s Inn.
Master of Scholarships, Lucinda Orr, said: “We are simply thrilled that the family of former Honorary Bencher, Sandra Day O’Connor, has allowed Gray’s Inn to name a US internship Scholarship in her honour. As the first female Supreme Court Justice in the United States, she was not only a trailblazer, but also a brilliant legal mind”
