The Inn offers a number of scholarships and prizes to support Members undertaking pupillage.

Senior Scholarships

Our most prestigious scholarships. Four scholarships, each with a value of £5,000, are awarded to pupils of exceptional merit.

Ann Goddard Scholarships

Pupils intending to build a practice at the publicly funded Bar can apply for these means tested scholarships, with over £80,000, awarded each year.

The Ede & Ravenscroft Prize

A wig and gown is awarded to a pupil who has embodied the Inn’s purpose, vision and values as a student Member.

The James Hunt Prize

The pupil with the best advocacy performance at the final stage of the Pupil Advocacy Course is awarded the James Hunt Prize.

    For the current application cycle, candidates must be undertaking a pupillage during the 2026/27 legal year, from Michaelmas term 2026.

  • Assessment

    Assessment

    To receive a scholarship, a candidate must pass a written and oral assessment.

    For each assessment, evidence is considered against the published assessment criteria.

    Academic Ability

    Demonstrates the strong academic foundation necessary to succeed as a barrister.

    Advocacy

    Can develop well structured, succinct, grammatically correct, and persuasively written argument. As an oral advocate, can communicate clearly, concisely and persuasively.

    Working with others

    Possesses the self-awareness and client care to excel as a Junior Tenant.

    Problem solving

    Possesses the professional judgement and problem-solving ability to excel as a Junior Tenant.

    Motivation to succeed

    Demonstrates a clear motivation and determination to succeed in their career.
