The Inn is delighted to note the Judicial appointment of the following Gray’s Inn Members in January 2023.

Timothy Nutley

The King has appointed Timothy Nutley to be a District Judge on the advice of the Lord Chancellor, the Right Honourable Dominic Raab MP and the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable The Lord Burnett of Maldon.

The Lord Chief Justice has deployed him to the South Eastern Circuit, based at Milton Keynes County Court with effect from Monday 16 January 2023.

Timothy Nutley will be known as District Judge Nutley. He was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors in 2004 and called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn in 2016. He was appointed as a Deputy District Judge in 2019.

Annabel Shaw

The King has appointed Annabel Shaw to be a District Judge on the advice of the Lord Chancellor, the Right Honourable Dominic Raab MP and the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable The Lord Burnett of Maldon.

The Lord Chief Justice has deployed her to the Midland Circuit, based at Birmingham Civil and Family Justice Centre with effect from Monday 9 January 2023.

Annabel Shaw will be known as District Judge Shaw. She was called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn in 2002. She was appointed as a Deputy District Judge in 2019.

Stacy Newnham-Payne

The King has appointed Stacy Newnham-Payne to be a District Judge on the advice of the Lord Chancellor, the Right Honourable Dominic Raab MP and the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable The Lord Burnett of Maldon.

The Lord Chief Justice has deployed her to the Midland Circuit, based at Dudley County Court with effect from Tuesday 3 January 2023.

Stacy Newnham-Payne will be known as District Judge Newnham-Payne. She was called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn in 2014. She was appointed as a Deputy District Judge in 2020.

Stuart Smith

The King has appointed Stuart Smith to be a District Judge (Magistrates’ Courts) on the advice of the Lord Chancellor, the Right Honourable Dominic Raab MP and the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable The Lord Burnett of Maldon.

The Lord Chief Justice has deployed him to the Western Circuit, based at Exeter Magistrates’ Court with effect from 13 February 2023.

Stuart Smith will be known as District Judge (Magistrates’ Courts) Stuart Smith. He was called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn in 2005. He was appointed as a Deputy District Judge in 2019.

Eight Gray’s Inn Members appointed as Deputy High Court Judges

The Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable The Lord Burnett of Maldon, has appointed 29 Deputy High Court Judges, under section 9(4) of the Senior Courts Act 1981, for a single fixed six-year term. The appointments will take place between 23 January 2023 and 22 January 2029.

The following Members were appointed following an open competition run by the Judicial Appointments Commission:
