Private Auction

Currently located in a private area of the Estate, the Inn has approved the sale of a portrait which was at one time believed to be of Sir John Holt. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Scholarship Trust.

Portrait of a Gentleman

  • Circle of John Closterman (1660 – 1711)
  • Oval, oil on canvas
  • Bust length in brown coat and full bottom wig.
  • Approximate size : 81cm/ 31.8” wide; 94cm/37” high; 6cm/ 2.3” depth
  • Condition: some damage to frame
  • Last valued at c.£300

The auction will be via sealed bids which should be sent to the Archivist with the subject line Private Auction.

Requests to view the portrait should be made to the same e-mail address giving reasonable notice and will be accommodated as far as possible. The auction opens on 18 March and all bids must be received by 17:00 on 31 May 2024. The highest bidder will be informed when the auction closes and required to make payment within five business days or the second highest bid will be accepted with the same protocol. Sale is final. If there are two or more identical highest bids, those parties will be informed and invited to make an additional bid. Only Members of Gray’s Inn may bid. The purchaser will be required to collect the portrait from the Inn and to provide any materials required for safe transport.
