Gray’s Inn is proud to announce the winners of the 2023 Lee and Michael Beloff Essay Prizes.

The Lee Prize

The Lee Essay Prize is an annual competition open to student members and those who have been called to the Bar for less than twelve months. Running between June and September, the Prize tasks entrants to write an essay on a selected subject on the Common or Statute Law of England and Wales. The winner of the competition is awarded £1,500, whilst the runner is awarded £500.

This year’s Prize asked entrants to submit an essay based on the question of, “Should mediation or some other ADR process be made a compulsory feature of the litigation process?”.

The Michael Beloff Prize

The Michael Beloff Essay Prize is an annual competition open to student members and those who have been called to the Bar for less than twelve months. Running between June and September, the Prize tasks entrants to write an essay on a selected subject in Administrative Law. The winner is awarded a £1,000 and is invited to include their essay as the lead publication in the Gray’s Inn Student Law Journal.

This year’s Prize asked entrants to submit an essay based on the question of, “Discuss our courts’ approach to the legal status of government policy including whether it is founded on a coherent bedrock of principle?”.
