Mixed Messes

1. Analyse concepts and principles in relation to the rule of law, the administration of justice and the Bar of England and Wales.

Prep4Practice (lecture format)

1. Develop a broad understanding of practical knowledge and skills needed in practice.
2. Enhance understanding of life in practice and the professional development of barristers.
3. Build connections with barristers and trainers through questioning, discussion and debate.
4. Apply the professional statement for barristers to improve understanding of the knowledge, skills and attributes required in practice.

Mooting

1. Construct arguments through research, analysis and application of legal principles.
2. Demonstrate confidence in advocacy, incorporating feedback from judges and moot coaches.
3. Apply inter-personal and communication skills to prepare oral presentations both independently and/or as a member of a team
4. Practice responding to judicial interventions.

Introductory events

1. Develop a broad understanding of the life of the Inn and what membership means for you.
2. Apply the relevant policies in relation to student QS and how it impacts members.
3. Explain the Inns’ services and how they can be accessed.
4. Enhance understanding of how the skills and knowledge gained with the Inn will complement learning you on the Bar Course.

Prep4Practice (practical format)

1. Prepare submissions for a given scenario which is realistic to pupillage.
2. Apply relevant civil or criminal procedure rules.
3. Demonstrate confidence in advocacy, incorporating feedback from judges and advocacy trainers.
4. Apply inter-personal and communication skills to prepare oral presentations.

Wellbeing

1. Reflect on individual wellbeing in the context of the vocational component of Bar training and the transition to pupillage.
2. Identify strategies and interventions which contribute to individual wellbeing.
3. Describe the agencies and resources available to support students and pupil wellbeing.

Professional Ethics

1. Discuss ethical dilemmas in the context of professional practice.
2. Apply the code of conduct to inform ethical decisions in line with standards and values of the profession.

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

1. Consider equality, diversity and inclusion at the Bar.
2. Discuss implications of inequality and a lack of diversity and inclusion on the rule of law and the profession.

Residential (all)

1. Practise delivering examination in chief of witnesses that is clear, well-organised and persuasive.
2. Practise delivering cross-examination of witnesses that is clear, well-organised and persuasive.
3. Develop content and advocacy skills for a closing speech.
4. Demonstrate confidence in advocacy, incorporating feedback from trainers.
